How I Improved My Relationship with My Sister-in-Law

How I Improved My Relationship with My Sister-in-Law

I used to envy families in which a sister-in-law was filial toward her parents-in-law and the sisters-in-law got along so harmoniously. Yet, although I was a Buddhist practitioner, my relationship with my younger brother’s wife was so distant that we were practically strangers.

Whenever our family gathered, I would unconsciously take on the role of a “judge.” This was especially true when it came to my sister-in-law. I could always find something she had failed to do thoughtfully enough for her mother-in-law—my mother. In my view, being filial meant that the younger generation should unconditionally respect, obey, and care for their elders. Somehow, I always felt that my sister-in-law fell a little short. She would also argue with my mother over trivial matters, and all of this became evidence, in my eyes, for judging her.

I would often reveal my dissatisfaction with her in front of other family members without even realizing it. My words carried a tone of reproach, and sometimes I even relied on my position as her husband’s elder sister to criticize her. Whenever my mother complained to me about her daughter-in-law, I would immediately take my mother’s side without considering the situation carefully and would find fault with my sister-in-law. As a result, I only intensified the conflict between them.

One day, I once again respectfully studied the Treasury book Learning From Buddha, in which the H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III expounded the Dharma. When I came to the specific teachings on “examining oneself three times a day,” I began to reflect upon and examine myself.

Suddenly, I realized: Wasn’t everything I had been doing at home precisely an example of becoming entangled in the rights and wrongs of worldly affairs?

I was constantly noticing other people’s faults and criticizing them, openly or indirectly, while completely forgetting to examine myself.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III teaches us not to focus on the faults of others. We should regard another person’s faults as our own. When we see shortcomings in others, we should regard them as a diminishment of ourselves; when we see goodness in others, we should regard it as our own good fortune.

Looking back at myself, I realized how often I had focused on other people’s faults. Whenever I complained about and criticized my sister-in-law in front of our family, saying that this or that about her was wrong, I had already become entangled in right and wrong, trapped in attachment to self, and caught up in thoughts such as, “You are wrong,” “What you are doing is not right,” and “I don’t like the way you do things.”

I was truly full of bad habits, a person deeply burdened by attachment to self. I had forgotten the H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s teachings. I had forgotten that with each passing day, there is one less day left in my life and that every day brings me closer to the crematorium. Every day, dark karma was accumulating upon me. How could I possibly attain accomplishment this way? And how could I guide others to learn Buddhism?

After recognizing the errors in my behavior, I immediately changed the way I treated my sister-in-law.

I began taking the initiative to help drive her children to and from school. I helped her with farm work. When she came home late from work, I would prepare meals and invite her and my mother to eat together. To help ease the tension between my mother and sister-in-law, I also began praising my sister-in-law during holiday family gatherings, telling everyone how hardworking and capable she was.

Just as a gentle rain quietly nourishes the earth, changes gradually began to take place. A smile slowly returned to my sister-in-law’s face, and our relationship became increasingly harmonious. Sometimes, she would even initiate conversations with me and talk about stories concerning cause and effect.

Her attitude toward my mother also underwent a remarkable transformation.

On one occasion, my mother was hospitalized and needed someone to care for her. At this critical time, my sister-in-law not only voluntarily took on the responsibility of caring for her mother-in-law, but also looked after her with great thoughtfulness. From preparing her meals and attending to her daily needs to comforting her emotionally, everything she did reflected patience and loving care.

Every day, she prepared nutritious meals for my mother and patiently kept her company, chatting with her to relieve her boredom. Even late at night, when everything was quiet, I would see her gently pulling the blanket over my mother.

Seeing all of this filled my heart with warmth. Her care touched every one of us.

When I think back, I realize that I had always viewed my sister-in-law through a prejudiced lens. I failed to understand that everyone expresses their feelings and care differently. Instead, I relied on my own subjective judgments and readily drew conclusions about her. Even worse, I had forgotten the Buddha’s teachings. Thinking about this fills me with shame.

My sister-in-law’s transformation not only improved our relationship but also brought about a profound cleansing of my own heart and allowed me to see myself more clearly. This experience reminds me to constantly examine myself, always keep the H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s teachings in mind, and put cultivation into practice in every aspect of daily life.

Today, I have learned to view each member of my family with a calmer and more peaceful mind. Instead of looking at other people’s faults through a magnifying glass, I have learned to be more tolerant and grateful.

As a result, life has become much more beautiful.

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Introduction

Living a long life is a goal shared by many people, but simply adding more years isn’t enough. Most of us hope to enjoy those years with good health, independence, and the ability to spend meaningful time with family and friends. This is why health experts often focus not only on lifespan—how long we live—but also on healthspan, the number of years we live in good physical and mental health.

Although no one can completely control aging or prevent every illness, research has consistently shown that our daily habits have a significant influence on long-term well-being. The choices we make every day—what we eat, how active we are, how well we sleep, how we manage stress, and how we care for our relationships—can all contribute to better health over time.

The encouraging news is that living a healthier life doesn’t require expensive equipment, complicated diets, or dramatic lifestyle changes. In fact, the most meaningful improvements often come from simple habits practiced consistently over many years.

Here are ten daily habits that may help you build a healthier lifestyle and support healthy aging.

1. Stay Physically Active Every Day

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Our bodies are designed to move. Regular physical activity helps keep the heart, muscles, joints, and lungs functioning well while supporting overall physical and mental health.

Exercise doesn’t have to mean spending hours in the gym. Walking around your neighborhood, gardening, cycling, dancing, swimming, or climbing stairs all count as valuable movement.

Aim to include activities that improve:

  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Muscle strength
  • Balance
  • Flexibility

Even short periods of movement throughout the day can be beneficial.

Simple Tip: If you sit for long periods, stand up and stretch every hour.

2. Choose Nutritious Whole Foods

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Food provides the nutrients your body needs to function properly. Rather than following restrictive diets, focus on eating a balanced variety of whole foods.

Try to include:

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Whole grains
  • Beans and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Healthy protein sources

Limiting highly processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of added sugar may also support long-term health.

Remember that healthy eating is about building sustainable habits rather than seeking perfection.

3. Make Quality Sleep a Priority

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Sleep is one of the body’s most important recovery processes. During sleep, the brain organizes memories, the body repairs tissues, and many essential biological functions take place.

Adults generally benefit from getting enough quality sleep each night, though individual needs vary.

Healthy sleep habits include:

  • Going to bed at a consistent time
  • Keeping your bedroom cool and quiet
  • Limiting screen time before bed
  • Avoiding large meals immediately before sleeping

If you often wake up feeling tired, it may be worthwhile to review your sleep routine with a healthcare professional.

4. Manage Stress in Healthy Ways

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Everyone experiences stress, but prolonged stress can affect both physical and emotional well-being.

Healthy ways to reduce stress include:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Reading
  • Meditation or mindfulness
  • Listening to relaxing music
  • Practicing hobbies you enjoy

Managing stress doesn’t mean eliminating challenges from life. Instead, it means developing healthy ways to respond to them.

5. Keep Learning and Challenge Your Mind

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Just as physical exercise strengthens the body, mental stimulation helps keep the brain active.

Consider activities such as:

  • Reading books
  • Learning a new language
  • Solving puzzles
  • Playing a musical instrument
  • Taking online courses
  • Learning new skills

Lifelong learning also brings a sense of accomplishment and curiosity that contributes to overall well-being.

6. Build Strong Relationships

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Humans naturally benefit from meaningful social connections. Spending time with family, friends, neighbors, or community groups provides emotional support and encourages a sense of belonging.

Simple ways to strengthen relationships include:

  • Calling a family member regularly
  • Having meals together
  • Volunteering in your community
  • Joining clubs or hobby groups
  • Expressing gratitude and kindness

Strong relationships often make life’s challenges easier to navigate.

7. Stay Hydrated

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Water plays an important role in nearly every function of the body, including regulating temperature, transporting nutrients, and supporting digestion.

Many people don’t drink enough water during the day.

Helpful habits include:

  • Carrying a reusable water bottle
  • Drinking water before meals
  • Choosing water instead of sugary beverages
  • Increasing fluid intake during hot weather or exercise

Hydration needs vary depending on age, health, activity level, and climate.

8. Schedule Preventive Health Checkups

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Preventive healthcare allows potential health concerns to be identified early.

Depending on your age and medical history, regular screenings may include:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Cholesterol testing
  • Blood sugar screening
  • Cancer screenings
  • Vision and hearing examinations
  • Dental checkups

Preventive care is an investment in your future health.

9. Avoid Harmful Habits

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Some lifestyle choices have been consistently associated with poorer health outcomes.

Examples include:

  • Smoking or using tobacco products
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Recreational drug misuse
  • Ignoring safety precautions such as wearing seat belts or sunscreen

Replacing harmful habits with healthier alternatives is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your long-term well-being.

10. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Many people give up on healthy habits because they expect immediate results.

In reality, healthy living is built through small improvements repeated consistently over time.

Rather than trying to change everything at once:

  • Add one serving of vegetables each day.
  • Walk for 20 minutes after dinner.
  • Go to bed 30 minutes earlier.
  • Spend a few minutes each morning stretching.

Small habits often become lasting routines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can healthy habits really help you live longer?

Research suggests that healthy lifestyle choices are associated with improved overall health and may contribute to a longer life. While no habit can guarantee longevity, consistent healthy behaviors can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases.

Is it too late to start living healthier?

It’s never too late to make positive lifestyle changes. People of all ages can benefit from improving their diet, becoming more physically active, sleeping better, and staying socially connected.

Which habit should I start with?

Choose the habit that feels most achievable for you. Success often comes from making one small change, maintaining it consistently, and then building upon it.

Final Thoughts

Living a longer, healthier life is not about finding a secret formula. Instead, it comes from making thoughtful choices each day and staying consistent over time.

Every healthy meal, every walk, every good night’s sleep, every meaningful conversation, and every effort to care for your body and mind is an investment in your future.

Remember that perfection isn’t the goal. Small steps, taken consistently, can lead to meaningful improvements in your health and quality of life.

Whether you’re just beginning your wellness journey or looking to strengthen existing habits, today is always a good day to start.

My First Experience at the Dharma Assembly Honoring the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

My First Experience at the Dharma Assembly Honoring the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

Before attending the Dharma Assembly Honoring the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, I knew very little about Buddhism and had never participated in such a large-scale Buddhist event. I accepted an invitation out of curiosity, expecting to observe a traditional religious ceremony. What I experienced, however, far exceeded my expectations and left a lasting impression on me.

Glendale Civic Auditorium
Glendale Civic Auditorium
My First Experience at the Dharma Assembly Honoring the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

From the moment I entered the venue, I sensed an atmosphere of dignity, serenity, and profound respect. The beautifully arranged altar, the graceful floral decorations, and the orderly seating reflected meticulous preparation. Despite the large number of attendees, everything proceeded with remarkable precision and harmony. Volunteers guided participants with genuine warmth and courtesy, always wearing welcoming smiles and patiently assisting anyone who needed help.

What amazed me most was the extraordinary level of organization. Every part of the Dharma Assembly unfolded smoothly and reverently. There was no confusion or disorder, even though people from many countries and cultural backgrounds had gathered together. The entire event demonstrated an impressive spirit of cooperation, discipline, and mutual respect that is rarely seen at gatherings of this size.

Below, I would like to share several news videos covering this event. I believe they beautifully demonstrate how well-organized, dignified, and solemn the ceremony appeared to the public. I was genuinely amazed and deeply impressed by how beautifully the entire event was conducted.

My First Experience at the Dharma Assembly Honoring the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

As I observed the ceremony, I was touched by the sincerity of everyone present. The participants were not merely attending an event—they were expressing heartfelt reverence and offering prayers for world peace, the well-being of humanity, and the happiness of all living beings. It was inspiring to witness so many people united by compassion and goodwill rather than personal interests.

Although I am not a disciple of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, attending this Dharma Assembly gave me an opportunity to learn more about Him and the values that His teachings encourage. As I listened to those around me speak about His teachings and observed the compassion, humility, and kindness reflected throughout the event, I began to understand why so many people deeply respect and appreciate Him. The atmosphere itself conveyed a powerful message—that genuine spiritual practice should inspire people to become more compassionate, more considerate of others, and more dedicated to creating harmony in society.

One aspect that particularly moved me was the selfless dedication of the volunteers. They worked quietly behind the scenes without seeking recognition, ensuring that every participant felt welcomed and cared for. Their humility, patience, and willingness to serve others demonstrated values that many people, regardless of their religious beliefs, would admire and respect.

My First Experience at the Dharma Assembly Honoring the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

As the Dharma Assembly came to a close, I found myself reflecting on the experience. In today’s fast-paced world, opportunities to witness such sincerity, harmony, and mutual respect are increasingly rare. This gathering was much more than a ceremonial celebration; it was a powerful reminder that kindness, compassion, and selfless service have the ability to bring people together across cultures and backgrounds.

I left the venue with a heart full of admiration and gratitude. Although I came simply as a visitor, I departed with a much deeper appreciation for the positive influence that Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III has had on so many people’s lives. Seeing thousands of individuals inspired to cultivate kindness, serve others, and pray for the well-being of the world was deeply moving.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have attended this remarkable Dharma Assembly. It was an unforgettable experience that broadened my understanding of Buddhism and demonstrated how genuine compassion and harmony can unite people from all walks of life. The solemnity of the ceremony, the exceptional organization, and the sincere spirit of everyone present will remain in my memory for years to come.

My cat watching me feed the possum last night…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a complicated expression on a cat’s face before. It wasn’t just jealousy — it was sadness, disappointment, and the tiniest bit of “how could you?” all mixed together.

The possum is happily munching away, completely oblivious, and meanwhile my cat is sitting in the corner like:
“Wow… I thought I was your favorite. Guess I was wrong.”

I swear, the look cut deeper than claws. If guilt trips were an Olympic sport, my cat would take gold. 🐱🥺🦝

Cats really are just like babies — gotta love them. 💖

Finding Patience at Costco ~ A Shopping Adventure😊✨

It felt like Costco taught me: patience is good, but great service makes patience a lot easier 🙏😊.

Went to Costco today, and you know how it usually feels like a training ground for patience — carts blocking the way, everyone rushing like they’re in some Olympic event for bulk shopping 😂. Normally, I treat it like a test in self-cultivation: “Breathe…don’t get annoyed…everyone’s just trying to get their 48-pack of water bottles.”

But today was different! They had this pre-scan service before the cashier, and wow — the line moved so much faster. No waiting around forever, no cart traffic jam. The helper was so cheerful too, smiling the whole time.

Honestly, it reminded me that good service doesn’t just speed things up — it makes the whole atmosphere lighter. Costco actually turned my grocery trip into a mini-lesson: patience is good, but friendly service makes patience a lot easier! 🙏😊

Ariana Madix Wants to Help You Couple Up with the Perfect Rescue Pet

The ‘Love Island USA’ host has joined ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign to raise awareness about pet adoption and fostering

A new animal lover has entered the ASPCA villa.

On Aug 22, the ASPCA announced that Ariana Madix has joined the animal welfare organization’s Rescue Effect campaign, created to help promote pet adoption from local rescues and shelters.

Madix, a proud rescue parent herself, will be adding a boost of attention to adoptable pets nationwide by promoting the Rescue Effect campaign on her social media channels from now through October.

“When you visit a shelter, you’ll see so many wonderful animals just waiting for a second chance,” the Love Island USA host said in a statement. “Choosing to adopt even one pet creates a ripple — not just for that animal, but for others who now have a better chance at finding a home, too.”

The Rescue Effect campaign and Madix’s support come at a critical time. According to the ASPCA, nearly 6 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2024. Unfortunately, many of these rescue pets, especially dogs, are staying in shelters longer, putting more strain on shelters’ already limited resources, and leaving less room for other animals in need.

For those who can’t adopt a pet. Madix and the ASPCA encourage them to consider fostering, which gives rescue pets time out of the stressful shelter environment and frees up shelters to take in more animals who need care.

Madix also wants people to foster or adopt a pet in the next few months, because she knows how much love these furry friends can bring to your life. She is currently a pet mom to two adopted cuties — 18-year-old cat Kitty and 6-year-old pit bull mix Mya Moon — and has given a forever home to numerous animals throughout her life.

“Pet adoption and rescue have been important to me since I was a little kid. My mom shared my love for animals, and she gave me the instinct to help them,” the former Vanderpump Rules star said. “I want people to know there are amazing animals in shelters who match all the things they say they’re looking for — whether it be breed, size, or age. These animals do exist in shelters — just go look.”

Over 550 shelters and rescues nationwide are participating in The Rescue Effect, working with the ASPCA and Madix to promote pet adoption in hopes of reducing the time animals spend waiting for loving homes.

“We’re thrilled to have Ariana Madix join the ASPCA for The Rescue Effect and use her voice to advocate for the millions of adoptable animals in need of loving homes,” Christa Chadwick, vice president of shelter services for the ASPCA, said. “Her support will help drive national awareness of the critical role shelters and rescue groups play in saving animals’ lives — and how every adoption makes a positive, lasting impact on even more.”

Choose Love: A Tale of Abandoned Pets

In the tapestry of life, where joy and sorrow intertwine, there’s a chapter that often goes unnoticed—a tale of silent suffering, of those who once knew the warmth of a home but were left to brave the world alone. This is the story of abandoned pets.

When you abandon your furry friend, you’re not just leaving them behind; you’re sentencing them to a life of anguish, fear, and heartbreaking solitude.

Imagine the confusion in their eyes, the ache in their hearts, as they wait for a familiar face that never returns. Abandonment is not just an act; it’s a cruelty that cuts deep into the very essence of trust and love.

Is it worth it? Is the temporary relief worth the enduring suffering that your once-beloved companion faces? Open your hearts and reconsider. They deserve more – more than the cold streets, more than the fear, more than the constant disappointment of being left behind.”

There’s a choice, a better way—a way that safeguards the bond you once cherished. Instead of turning your back, turn towards responsible and compassionate alternatives.

If circumstances are tough, reach out. Seek help from the responsible and compassionate alternatives. Find your pets another loving home that willing to provide a safe haven and a chance for a better life.

There are stories of redemption, of abandoned hearts finding solace in the arms of compassion. Be a part of that story – a story that ends with hope, not despair.

Together, we can rewrite the narrative. Say no to abandonment, say yes to compassion. Your decision can make a world of difference for those who have no voice.”

Let’s be the guardians of those who can’t speak for themselves. Choose love over abandonment. Because in the end, every wagging tail, every purr, and every joyful bark is a testament to the healing power of compassion.

End abandonment. Choose love. Save lives.

Embracing Compassion: The Heartbeat of Humanity in Our Connection with Animals

In the tapestry of our world, amidst the bustling lives we lead, exists a delicate yet profound connection that transcends species boundaries—the connection between humanity and the animal kingdom. This bond, woven with threads of empathy, kindness, and understanding, is the embodiment of compassion for animals.

The Symphony of Empathy:

Compassion for animals resonates in the symphony of empathy that beats within our hearts. It is the understanding that animals experience emotions, forge bonds, and cherish life’s moments, much like we do. Their joys, fears, and pain are not mere echoes but heartfelt realities.

In the Eyes of Compassion:

Gaze into the eyes of an animal, and you’ll find a world brimming with stories—stories of resilience, loyalty, and unconditional love. It’s in these moments of connection that compassion finds its voice, echoing the call to honor and respect the lives that share our planet.

The Ethical Imperative:

Compassion isn’t just a feeling; it’s a guiding principle that propels us toward ethical choices. It challenges us to question the systems that exploit, harm, or disregard the welfare of animals. It champions the cause of humane treatment and advocates for a world where every life is valued.

From Heart to Action:

Compassion ignites action. It fuels advocacy efforts, inspiring individuals to stand as guardians for those who cannot speak for themselves. It fuels movements, it drives us to create sanctuaries, rescue animals in need, and nurture environments where animals thrive.

A Symphony of Change:

As our world evolves, so does our understanding of compassion for animals. It’s about embracing sustainable practices, nurturing wildlife, and supporting initiatives that safeguard their habitats. It’s about choosing a lifestyle that reflects kindness, reducing our footprint on the earth they share with us.

The Ripple Effect of Compassion:

Compassion for animals extends far beyond the animals themselves. It enriches our lives, teaching us patience, humility, and the beauty of coexistence. It fosters a more empathetic and caring society, reflecting the essence of our humanity.

A Promise of Hope:

In every act of compassion, a promise of hope emerges—a promise of a world where every life is cherished, respected, and allowed to flourish. It’s a world where our kinship with animals enriches our existence and defines the legacy we leave behind.

In the tapestry of humanity, compassion for animals is the golden thread that weaves a brighter, more compassionate future. As we navigate this shared journey, may our hearts resonate with the harmony of empathy, kindness, and love for all living beings.
