10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Introduction

Living a long life is a goal shared by many people, but simply adding more years isn’t enough. Most of us hope to enjoy those years with good health, independence, and the ability to spend meaningful time with family and friends. This is why health experts often focus not only on lifespan—how long we live—but also on healthspan, the number of years we live in good physical and mental health.

Although no one can completely control aging or prevent every illness, research has consistently shown that our daily habits have a significant influence on long-term well-being. The choices we make every day—what we eat, how active we are, how well we sleep, how we manage stress, and how we care for our relationships—can all contribute to better health over time.

The encouraging news is that living a healthier life doesn’t require expensive equipment, complicated diets, or dramatic lifestyle changes. In fact, the most meaningful improvements often come from simple habits practiced consistently over many years.

Here are ten daily habits that may help you build a healthier lifestyle and support healthy aging.

1. Stay Physically Active Every Day

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Our bodies are designed to move. Regular physical activity helps keep the heart, muscles, joints, and lungs functioning well while supporting overall physical and mental health.

Exercise doesn’t have to mean spending hours in the gym. Walking around your neighborhood, gardening, cycling, dancing, swimming, or climbing stairs all count as valuable movement.

Aim to include activities that improve:

  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Muscle strength
  • Balance
  • Flexibility

Even short periods of movement throughout the day can be beneficial.

Simple Tip: If you sit for long periods, stand up and stretch every hour.

2. Choose Nutritious Whole Foods

Food provides the nutrients your body needs to function properly. Rather than following restrictive diets, focus on eating a balanced variety of whole foods.

Try to include:

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Whole grains
  • Beans and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Healthy protein sources

Limiting highly processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of added sugar may also support long-term health.

Remember that healthy eating is about building sustainable habits rather than seeking perfection.

3. Make Quality Sleep a Priority

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Sleep is one of the body’s most important recovery processes. During sleep, the brain organizes memories, the body repairs tissues, and many essential biological functions take place.

Adults generally benefit from getting enough quality sleep each night, though individual needs vary.

Healthy sleep habits include:

  • Going to bed at a consistent time
  • Keeping your bedroom cool and quiet
  • Limiting screen time before bed
  • Avoiding large meals immediately before sleeping

If you often wake up feeling tired, it may be worthwhile to review your sleep routine with a healthcare professional.

4. Manage Stress in Healthy Ways

Everyone experiences stress, but prolonged stress can affect both physical and emotional well-being.

Healthy ways to reduce stress include:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Reading
  • Meditation or mindfulness
  • Listening to relaxing music
  • Practicing hobbies you enjoy

Managing stress doesn’t mean eliminating challenges from life. Instead, it means developing healthy ways to respond to them.

5. Keep Learning and Challenge Your Mind

Just as physical exercise strengthens the body, mental stimulation helps keep the brain active.

Consider activities such as:

  • Reading books
  • Learning a new language
  • Solving puzzles
  • Playing a musical instrument
  • Taking online courses
  • Learning new skills

Lifelong learning also brings a sense of accomplishment and curiosity that contributes to overall well-being.

6. Build Strong Relationships

Humans naturally benefit from meaningful social connections. Spending time with family, friends, neighbors, or community groups provides emotional support and encourages a sense of belonging.

Simple ways to strengthen relationships include:

  • Calling a family member regularly
  • Having meals together
  • Volunteering in your community
  • Joining clubs or hobby groups
  • Expressing gratitude and kindness

Strong relationships often make life’s challenges easier to navigate.

7. Stay Hydrated

Water plays an important role in nearly every function of the body, including regulating temperature, transporting nutrients, and supporting digestion.

Many people don’t drink enough water during the day.

Helpful habits include:

  • Carrying a reusable water bottle
  • Drinking water before meals
  • Choosing water instead of sugary beverages
  • Increasing fluid intake during hot weather or exercise

Hydration needs vary depending on age, health, activity level, and climate.

8. Schedule Preventive Health Checkups

Preventive healthcare allows potential health concerns to be identified early.

Depending on your age and medical history, regular screenings may include:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Cholesterol testing
  • Blood sugar screening
  • Cancer screenings
  • Vision and hearing examinations
  • Dental checkups

Preventive care is an investment in your future health.

9. Avoid Harmful Habits

Some lifestyle choices have been consistently associated with poorer health outcomes.

Examples include:

  • Smoking or using tobacco products
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Recreational drug misuse
  • Ignoring safety precautions such as wearing seat belts or sunscreen

Replacing harmful habits with healthier alternatives is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your long-term well-being.

10. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

10 Daily Habits That May Help You Live Longer: Simple Choices for a Healthier, Happier Life

Many people give up on healthy habits because they expect immediate results.

In reality, healthy living is built through small improvements repeated consistently over time.

Rather than trying to change everything at once:

  • Add one serving of vegetables each day.
  • Walk for 20 minutes after dinner.
  • Go to bed 30 minutes earlier.
  • Spend a few minutes each morning stretching.

Small habits often become lasting routines.

My cat watching me feed the possum last night…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a complicated expression on a cat’s face before. It wasn’t just jealousy — it was sadness, disappointment, and the tiniest bit of “how could you?” all mixed together.

The possum is happily munching away, completely oblivious, and meanwhile my cat is sitting in the corner like:
“Wow… I thought I was your favorite. Guess I was wrong.”

I swear, the look cut deeper than claws. If guilt trips were an Olympic sport, my cat would take gold. 🐱🥺🦝

Cats really are just like babies — gotta love them. 💖

Ariana Madix Wants to Help You Couple Up with the Perfect Rescue Pet

The ‘Love Island USA’ host has joined ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign to raise awareness about pet adoption and fostering

A new animal lover has entered the ASPCA villa.

On Aug 22, the ASPCA announced that Ariana Madix has joined the animal welfare organization’s Rescue Effect campaign, created to help promote pet adoption from local rescues and shelters.

Madix, a proud rescue parent herself, will be adding a boost of attention to adoptable pets nationwide by promoting the Rescue Effect campaign on her social media channels from now through October.

“When you visit a shelter, you’ll see so many wonderful animals just waiting for a second chance,” the Love Island USA host said in a statement. “Choosing to adopt even one pet creates a ripple — not just for that animal, but for others who now have a better chance at finding a home, too.”

The Rescue Effect campaign and Madix’s support come at a critical time. According to the ASPCA, nearly 6 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2024. Unfortunately, many of these rescue pets, especially dogs, are staying in shelters longer, putting more strain on shelters’ already limited resources, and leaving less room for other animals in need.

For those who can’t adopt a pet. Madix and the ASPCA encourage them to consider fostering, which gives rescue pets time out of the stressful shelter environment and frees up shelters to take in more animals who need care.

Madix also wants people to foster or adopt a pet in the next few months, because she knows how much love these furry friends can bring to your life. She is currently a pet mom to two adopted cuties — 18-year-old cat Kitty and 6-year-old pit bull mix Mya Moon — and has given a forever home to numerous animals throughout her life.

“Pet adoption and rescue have been important to me since I was a little kid. My mom shared my love for animals, and she gave me the instinct to help them,” the former Vanderpump Rules star said. “I want people to know there are amazing animals in shelters who match all the things they say they’re looking for — whether it be breed, size, or age. These animals do exist in shelters — just go look.”

Over 550 shelters and rescues nationwide are participating in The Rescue Effect, working with the ASPCA and Madix to promote pet adoption in hopes of reducing the time animals spend waiting for loving homes.

“We’re thrilled to have Ariana Madix join the ASPCA for The Rescue Effect and use her voice to advocate for the millions of adoptable animals in need of loving homes,” Christa Chadwick, vice president of shelter services for the ASPCA, said. “Her support will help drive national awareness of the critical role shelters and rescue groups play in saving animals’ lives — and how every adoption makes a positive, lasting impact on even more.”

Along with enlisting Madix for The Rescue Effect, the ASPCA is also providing $2 million in grant funding to more than 100 shelters for the campaign, so the shelters can waive adoption fees and cover operating costs.

The Green Path: Unveiling the Benefits of Vegetarianism

The Green Path: Unveiling the Benefits of Vegetarianism

Becoming a vegetarian comes with several advantages:

Health Benefits: A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes tends to be lower in saturated fats and cholesterol. Studies suggest it can lower the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. It often leads to better weight management and improved overall health.

Environmental Impact: Livestock farming contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. Adopting a vegetarian diet can reduce your carbon footprint, preserve water resources, and help combat climate change.

Animal Welfare: Many people choose vegetarianism due to ethical reasons. They believe in reducing animal suffering by avoiding meat consumption. This choice aligns with a compassionate lifestyle that promotes the welfare of animals.

Expanded Culinary Horizons: Going vegetarian encourages exploring new foods, flavors, and cooking methods. It often leads to discovering a variety of nutritious and delicious plant-based recipes.

Economic and Accessibility: Vegetarian diets can be more cost-effective, as plant-based proteins are often less expensive than meat. Moreover, plant-based foods are accessible and available in many regions worldwide.

Digestive Health: For some individuals, a vegetarian diet can improve digestion and alleviate certain digestive issues due to its high fiber content from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

While vegetarianism offers numerous benefits, it’s essential to plan meals to ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients such as protein, iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids that are commonly found in meat. Consulting a nutritionist or doing research to maintain a balanced diet is often recommended when transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle.

You have been running to slim down, but not losing weight! This is because you have not done these 3 things. A must-see for runners who aim for weight loss!

You have been running to slim down, but not losing weight!  This is because you have not done these 3 things:

We often hear this: “I work so hard on running to slim down, but why have I not been able to lose weight? Then, we should ask ourselves, how long did I run? When I ran, did I change the speed? Did I adjust the incline of the treadmill?

Change these 3 habits, then you will be able to run for weight loss!

Everybody knows that running is a very easy aerobics exercise.  The celebrity, Janine Chang is definitely a pro in this field.  It does not only keep you fit but also a way to keep you in good shape. Amber An, just days ago, also revealed that she runs to slim down for a good shape. Upon looking at them slimming down successfully through running, don’t you wonder, “How come it didn’t happen to me?”  Stay with us.  To run for weight loss, the key is to follow these 3 things:

Follow these 3 must-dos for running to lose weight.  You will then see results.

  1. Duration

Running is a long-term weight loss plan.  In a short term, you will not see much weight loss result.  Many people expect to lose weight drastically through running.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t work this way. The changes will build up through time.

Therefore, if you want to lose weight through running, first ask yourself this question, “After I get on the treadmill, do I quit after one or two km?  In other words, the training duration is too short.  The distance is not long enough.  You will see no results.

We recommend that every session should be at least 20 minutes.  This is because only after 20 minutes of running, the body will then use up glycogen and begin to burn the fat that stores energy.  Our recommendation is to set the running frequencies to 4-5 days a week. Commit to a routine workout for 3-5 months. This way you will see weight loss.  It also trains your heart and lungs.

  1. Speed

Many people set the speed of the treadmill to very high once they are on it.  They end up pushing themselves to sweat in a short time and ran out of breath.  This way of running tends to exhaust the body leading to insufficient supplies of oxygen to the body and as a result you fail to reach the target of fat burning.

Days ago, the celebrity, Amber An generously shared her running method how she successfully lost 7 kilos through running.  According to her running method, she runs at least once every two days.  Every session is 15-20 minutes.  The speed is set at 10 for 10 minutes, then gradually moving up, even one increment every 1 minute.  Amber An said this method of running training makes her sweat in a short time.  Running this way for 15 minutes, she saw more results and felt more sensation of working out than running 30 minutes or 1 hour.

From Amber An’s running routine, have you noticed a key point? That is right.  It is the changes of the speed.  Through ramping up the speed, distance or strength, it will push the body to burn more calories.  In addition, you can also take into consideration of the Fartleks training which translates into “speed play” in sports terms from Sweden.  Through interval trainings of fast running and slower running, it changes the strength of the training.

  1. Incline

Many people worry that running will lead to thick lower legs.  Therefore, they dare not to increase the incline of the treadmill.  They sure need to correct their view!

Running on a treadmill with incline does not only prevent your lower legs from getting thick but also slim them down.  This is because this way of running stretches the muscle of the lower legs.  Therefore, when you jog, be bold and adjust to incline to 10 degrees.  Adjust the incline throughout your running session.  This way you push up the strength training of your running.  At the same time, you are engaging in the muscle training of your lower legs, elongating your body shape.

In order to slim down successfully through running, the key is patience.

When we want to slim down through running, we must control our running duration, incline, and speed.  In addition, you can also incorporate the HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)

For example, for most people, when they run, they may spend over 30 minutes at the same tempo.  Instead, you can try a training routine of fast-slow-fast-slow, which targets calories burning and fat burning.  Now, let me share with you a running routine.

After you are warmed up, while on the treadmill, run at a set speed for 5 minutes.  Then increase the speed to a sprint for 1 minute, pushing your body to a shock through high strength training.  Then immediately lower the speed and walk fast for 2 minutes. Continue with such interval training 3-5 times.  Follow this running routine and run 2-4 times a week.  Try to incorporate the HIIT.  Give yourself time and be patient.  I believe it is not that hard after all to lose weight through running.

You have been running to slim down, but not losing weight! This is because you have not done these 3 things. A must-see for runners who aim for weight loss!
